Forging Character examines the interplay between unmet desires and interpersonal relationships. The book addresses Christian men, detailing how desire creates opportunities to connect with God in the masculine life. Every desire comes with a choice: to respond with faith, lust, anger, or avolition. Faith is managing desire appropriately by choosing to trust. Lust is seeking to control the gratification of our desires independently, whereas anger is attempting to control others for the sake of our gratification. Finally, avolition is the loss of desire, experienced when we give up any hope of fulfillment. The manner in which we choose to handle desires influences our character, either cultivating Christlikeness or depravity. Each chapter discusses obstacles to handling desires with faith, and contains an example by following the story of a fictional character named Joe.
