By day, she is a forgotten, abused noble lady. By night, she is the underworld's most brilliant alchemist. But what happens when the kingdom's most terrifying ruler demands her skills—and her complete devotion?
Ariel Vandel's life is a masterclass in deception. Trapped in a decaying annex by a cruel stepmother and a vain half-sister, she plays the role of the pathetic, unloved daughter of a declining noble house. But when midnight strikes, Ariel sheds her rags, using a rare magical artifact to disguise herself as "El"—a brazen, cynical boy and a genius alchemist who rules the shadows of the capital's black market. While the surface world relies on dangerous, mass-produced magical devices, Ariel is the sole inheritor of the lost ancient art of Multi-Layer Circuitry.
Her secret double life is perfectly balanced until the arrival of an impossible client: Julius von Clavis, the ruthless Premier Marquis feared by all as the "Ice Chancellor."
Cursed with an overwhelming, monstrous mana that destroys everything he touches and causes him excruciating pain, Julius is desperate for salvation. When Ariel flawlessly crafts a bespoke Mana Harmonizer capable of taming his catastrophic power, she unwittingly seals her own fate. Julius doesn't just want her creations; he demands the creator.
Forced into an exclusive contract, Ariel finds herself pulled into his opulent, heavily guarded estate. As the Chancellor's personal artisan, she is given limitless funds, supreme materials, and an underground workshop that rivals the royal palace. But this golden cage comes with a heavy price: the absolute, suffocating, and dangerously sweet obsession of a man who vows to never let her go.
As Julius's dark devotion and overprotective nature deepen, his terrifyingly sharp intellect begins to piece together the clues connecting the brilliant boy alchemist "El" to the mud-stained, oppressed lady "Ariel." With his predatory gaze closing in on her daytime reality, Ariel must navigate a perilous tightrope between her two lives.
"Forged in Shadows" is the thrilling first installment of "The Midnight Alchemist: The Ice Chancellor's Obsession" series. Dive into a captivating romantic fantasy filled with ancient magic, hidden identities, satisfying retribution, and a supremely powerful, possessive male lead who will conquer the world to protect the woman who became his heart.
