It's been two years since what's now known as the McCarthy Incident, and the world of Scanning has gone back to normal. For the most part. Cam Tylar has rejoined his Canadian Scanning Team, Revolution, ready to finally win it all. Maria Kier remained in the Canadian Armed Forces, working with soldiers to strengthen the connection with their Artificial Intelligence Morpher (AIM) units.
But when Maria reads a report from an American operation in Afghanistan, everything changes. A group of rogue AIMs is wandering the Afghan landscape, causing death and destruction in their wake - and the insurgents who once controlled them are demanding someone finds and returns the AIMs. Maria is ordered back into the war she thought she'd left behind, but there's only one person who can reprogram rogue AIMs.
