This book, Einstein's Dice: A Conceptual Introduction to Quantum Physics, is intended for anyone with an interest in the tantalising and often confusing subject of quantum physics, ranging from readers with a casual curiosity about popular science to college physics majors seeking a conceptual discussion of quantum theory beyond their traditional, more mathematically focused education. The text grew out of a general education course for non-scientists at the University of Massachusetts, where it has been refined and developed over many years. It aims to provide a complete, stand-alone overview of the foundations of quantum mechanics, adopting a pedagogical rather than mathematical or strictly historical approach. In doing so, it draws on modern quantum experiments, contemporary technologies, and recent theoretical advances to illuminate the core principles of the theory and foster an intuitive understanding of quantum phenomena.
Readership: Readers interested in popular science who have at least a passing curiosity about quantum physics, or modern physics more generally. Einstein's Dice is written with minimal mathematical formalism to appeal to this broad audience. General education college courses for non-scientists that cover modern physics, quantum mechanics, or the philosophy of science. The material in Einstein's Dice was developed specifically for such an audience in a general education course for non-scientists at the University of Massachusetts. Undergraduate physics majors seeking a conceptual discussion of quantum theory to complement their traditional, more mathematically focused education.
