When her brother, James, went to war, Annie stitched the name Digger onto her toy kangaroo and gave him to James as a farewell present.
'A Digger for a digger,' she said, hugging her brother.
'I'll keep him safe,' James promised.

Digger is the story of one toy kangaroo, one Australian soldier and two girls, in two countries on opposite sides of a world at war. It's a quiet reminder of the casualties of war, and a tribute to the French schoolchildren who once tended the graves of Australian soldiers who died on the Western Front in the heroic battle for Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918.

A beautiful and heart-warming story set during World War I.

Absolutely heartwarming and wonderful read aloud!

I have just read this book, and it is absolutely wonderful. It tells the story of an Australian girl who gives her stuffed kangaroo "Digger" to her brother who goes off to war to dig trenches. The brother keeps the kangaroo in his pocket. The brother gets hurt and during his recovery, he becomes friends with a young, French girl who sews Digger back together. The brother returns to war and dies. The French girl repairs and returns the kangaroo to the sister in Australia with a promise for the future. This story deals with the sad reality of death in a very subtle way suitable for young readers and is a heartwarming story. I absolutely love it!
