Continuous dislocation dynamics (CDD) is a modelling approach used to study crystal plasticity. By treating dislocations which are carriers of crystal deformation as continuously spread defects represented by a density, CDD aims to fill the mesoscopic gap in multi-scale materials modelling. This book will present an easy-to-read introduction to continuous dislocation dynamics (CDD). Unlike many earlier models, the book will aim to introduce CDD as an exact, rather than approximate or ad hoc, approach to crystal plasticity. The book will be written in a style aiming to facilitate understanding of the difficult mathematical concepts of dislocation dynamics. The aim is that a senior undergraduate or starting PhD student will find the book accessible. The reader is assumed to have only basic understanding of dislocations. The book will go through the theories first, and then present MATLAB computer codes for executing the simulation using the theories.

Key Features:

  • The first dedicated treatment to CDD, an important meso-scale modelling method for dislocation plasticity
  • Focuses on exact theories of CDD
  • Presents an easy-to-read introduction to the subject at a level that is suitable for senior undergraduate or starting PhD students
  • Includes worked examples, simulation codes and simulation videos
