Chushingura, or The Treasury of Loyal Retainers, brings to life Japan's most celebrated tale of loyalty and revenge, the Ako vendetta, in an eleven-act drama that includes the famous Bridal Journey episode. This edition is introduced as a fuller translation, while acknowledging how difficult it is to carry the play's poetic language, wordplay, and musical joruri style into English. Beneath its graceful surfaces lies a world shaped by Tokugawa-era custom, feudal honor, and the uncompromising demands of duty. At the center is Lord Hangwan's ritual death and the grief it unleashes among his retainers, especially Yuranosuke, who transforms despair into a hidden vow of vengeance, symbolized by his lord's bloodstained dirk. From there the drama widens into scenes of survival, testing, and sacrifice: the fallen samurai Kanpei struggles to reclaim his honor; Yagoro quietly measures his loyalty; and a terrible roadside encounter leads to the murder of old Yoichibei and a cruel twist of fate when Kanpei unknowingly acquires the stolen money. Meanwhile, Okaru waits in anxious dignity, her household shadowed by hardship and unspoken burdens, as the story moves toward the next decisive turn. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
