Chasing AfroBeats follows a single night in Johannesburg, tracing the connection between two strangers, R and N, who meet at a daytime party and impulsively decide to go dancing together before R leaves town the next day.
As they move through the city in search of AfroBeats, they pass through a series of venues that mirror different versions of nightlife, from quiet bars and polished spaces to grittier, more charged environments. With each stop, their physical closeness grows, shaped less by conversation than by shared movement, missed rhythms, and the momentum of the night itself. The city becomes an active presence, guiding them forward through wrong turns and chance decisions.
Their search culminates in Hillbrow, at Summit, a strip club where the music finally arrives and restraint falls away. In this raw, unapologetic space, R and N stop chasing and allow themselves to be fully present, embracing desire without promises or expectations.
In the early hours of the morning, they return to R's temporary home, where the intensity of the night softens into reflection. Acknowledging that R will leave the next day, they accept the connection for what it is: complete, temporary, and honest.
Chasing AfroBeats is a literary exploration of presence, desire, and the meaning found in fleeting connections, set against the pulse of Johannesburg nightlife.
