In English and Mandarin Chinese, Belle Yang's bilingual board books celebrate the natural world with simple concepts and beautiful, bold illustrations. Wet weather is coming -- "whoosh!" As rain falls like soybeans --" ping ping, pang pang -- "Hedgehog runs quickly --"pitter patter. "Soon he will be safe and warm with Mama --" purr purr. "What other sounds does he hear along the way? Tonal marks used in the book are explained in a final spread, along with a pinyin translation of the Chinese characters.

About the Author

Belle Yang is the author-illustrator of the companion board books A Nest in Springtime and Summertime Rainbow, as well as Foo, the Flying Frog of Washtub Pond; Hannah Is My Name; and Always Come Home to Me, a Chinese American Librarians Association Best Children's Book. She lives in California.

Yang's simplified gouache paintings picture the spiky brown hedgehog crawling over green fields covered with spiraling grasses, windblown cattails, and fallen autumn leaves, the storm providing ample opportunities for onomatopoeia: "Crack! Baroom! The sky sounds angry." Chinese characters appear alongside the English narration, and a pinyin translation at book's end allows readers to see how sound effects translate.
