It's 1981, and superstar running back Blue Bedford is striving for another Super Bowl ring. His stylish and smart manager and attorney, Toby, tries to keep Blue focused on winning, but the distractions at home keep on piling up. His wildly ambitious mother, Bessie, is dating his former bodyguard, a dangerous former pro boxer named Sparks. Blue is also cheating on his wife, Savannah, in part because he has never loved her as much as she loves him. Blue himself has only ever loved one woman, Megan, with whom Blue once had a passionate affair in Atlanta before he'd gone pro.
But Megan wants nothing to do with Blue anymore. She's become deeply recommitted to her husband, John Smith, a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force-and now that their paratrooper son has gone missing in Ecuador, and his father is working on bringing him home, that's all Megan can think about.
After assaulting Bessie, Sparks is on the run, and Blue is using all his considerable wealth and influence to track him down. Blue has also fallen for someone new-a young, earnest woman named Irene who loves him dearly and is now pregnant with his child.
