Devi Saraswati & The Swan (Hamsa)
Devi Saraswati is the personification of the river of consciousness. Her vehicle, the Swan, is celebrated for its Neera-Ksheera Viveka—the mythical ability to separate milk from water. This symbolizes the highest form of intelligence: the ability to extract the eternal Truth from the transient world.
The Silent Queen of chord and quill,
Atop the lake so white and still;
She rides the wing of purest grace,
To find the truth in every place.
The swan discerns with steady heart,
To tear the false and true apart;
From muddy depths, it rises clear,
To bring the song of wisdom near.
It skims the glass of ancient lore,
To find the pearl upon the shore;
With feathers white as mountain snow,
Where'er the streams of logic flow.
It flies above the worldly tide,
With neither vanity nor pride;
For she who guides the seeker's hand,
Requires a mind that can expand.
Through rhythmic pulse and silver string,
She teaches every soul to sing;
But only those with vision keen,
Can see the light within the seen.
As milk is drawn from water's haze,
Through focused thought and steady gaze;
The student learns to choose the gold,
And let the dross of life unfold.
The Hamsa sails on silent breath,
Triumphant over mental death;
It does not sink within the lake,
But stays afloat for wisdom's sake.
It represents the Prana's flight,
From morning mist to noon-day light;
The breath that moves within the chest,
Seeking the soul's eternal rest.
Where Saraswati's feet have trod,
The mind becomes a house of God;
The swan provides the rhythmic beat,
That makes the sacred work complete.
No noise of ego, harsh or loud,
Can pierce her white and holy cloud;
The swan moves with a quiet force,
Remaining on its heavenly course.
She holds the book and holds the bead,
To plant in us the spirit's seed;
The Hamsa guards the garden gate,
Where logic meets a higher state.
It glides past doubt and past despair,
As light as thought, as free as air;
A symbol of the liberated mind,
That leaves all bitterness behind.
So let the Hamsa lead the way,
From darkest night to brightest day;
Where knowledge reigns and shadows flee,
The spirit gains its liberty.
