They grew up on opposite sides of a fence, believing they would spend their entire lives together.
James Broony Banks and Gloria McFriday had been neighbors since birth. Childhood friendship became teenage love, and by their early twenties, they were married, building a simple life together in their small American town. Their future seemed certain—until war changed everything.
When America enters World War II, James leaves for Europe, carrying Gloria's photograph and the promise that he will return. Their love survives through letters as James crosses the Atlantic and enters a world of destruction, fear, and death.
Then, during a devastating attack in France, James is badly wounded and separated from his unit. He is reported missing in action.
Gloria waits.
Months become years. With no body and no final word, she is forced to live with the terrible uncertainty of whether her husband is alive or dead.
But James survives.
A young French woman, Marie Lortues, discovers him near a ruined road and risks everything to save him. As James recovers, Marie becomes his protector, his companion, and eventually the woman he loves. When the war ends, James has a chance to return to America and to the wife who never stopped waiting.
He chooses France.
Five years after disappearing, James finally writes to Gloria.
He tells her the truth: he survived. He stayed in France. He built a new life. Marie became his wife.
For Gloria, the letter is both a miracle and a devastating betrayal. The husband she mourned was never dead. He had been alive all along—and had chosen not to come home.
