Gerry, an idealistic documentary filmmaker, starts to track the lives of five children. All he wants is one day out of each year of their lives, to follow them with a camera, charting their growth and development until they turn 21. As the five children grow into adulthood and enter into relationships, questions are raised as to whether they are in fact his subjects, his children - or are they, as some of them begin to fear, his creations? The partners of the now famous children also feel the impact and pressures of the filmmaker and the camera's ever-present role in their lives. In analysing the truth and motivation behind Gerry and his fly-on-the-wall documentary, the children and their partners ultimately reveal the secrets of the story-teller himself.
