When nurse Eva Shaw takes a post caring for a bitter invalid on a remote Pacific island, she expects loneliness, not the arrival of Maxime de Vaux — her employer's darkly attractive brother-in-law, a man whose every glance unravels her hard-won composure. Against her better judgment, Eva falls. But Estelle de Vere is a woman who feeds on ruin, and she has hidden one devastating truth: Max is not free. Betrayed and humiliated, Eva flees back to England, burying her heart beneath a starched uniform and a life of work.
Three years later, a casual invitation from a persistent young suitor delivers Eva to a grand Georgian house she has never seen — and into the presence of the two people she swore never to face again. Estelle is waiting, her malice undimmed. And the master of the house is Max.
Trapped by fog, tormented by a love neither of them will name, Eva learns that almost everything she believed about Maxime de Vaux was a lie spun by a jealous woman. But pride is a hard master, and the past has teeth. Between a scheming rival, a wounded man too proud to explain himself, and a secret that has shadowed Eva for three years, the truth will cost them both before it sets them free.
From a sun-struck island to a fog-bound English winter and back again, A Distant Thunder is a sweeping, slow-burn reunion romance in the classic vintage tradition — where the storm you fear most is the one that finally brings you home.
