Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: he thinks and feels in nearly human ways. He has educated himself by watching extensive television, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo realizes that racing is a metaphor: that by applying the techniques a driver would apply on the race track, one can successfully navigate the ordeals and travails one encounters in life. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: he thinks and feels in nearly human ways. He has educated himself by watching extensive television, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo realizes that racing is a metaphor: that by applying the techniques a driver would apply on the race track, one can successfully navigate the ordeals and travails one encounters in life.Enzo relates the story of his human family, sharing their tragedies and triumphs. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations as a dog, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a testament to a man's life, given by his dog. But it is also a testament to the dog, himself. Though Enzo cannot speak, he understands everything that happens around him as he bears witness to his master's problems. His enforced muteness only refines his listening ability, and allows him to understand many of life's nuances that are lost on most humans. With humour, sharp observation, and a courageous heart, Enzo guides the reader to the bittersweet yet ultimately satisfying conclusion: there are no limitations to what we can achieve, if we truly know where we want to be.

Comments about The Art of Racing in the Rain:

I bought, and read, this book for an upcoming book club meet. It was an easy read and it didn't take me long to get through it. I'd never read a book from the point of view of a dog - it was definitely a unique perspective and I found it sweet and emotive. I'd recommend it as a holiday read or for someone looking for something light and easy. A warning though, some readers may need to have tissues handy!

Comments about The Art of Racing in the Rain:

This book is such an inciteful portrayal of life from a dogs point of view. Anyone who has a dog or any pet they love will understand how this could be exactly what is going on in the pet's mind. As a fan of car racing I particularly enjoyed his estimation drivers. Amusing and touching, I loved the wisdom of the dog and his simple view of our complicated life.It may just be a work of fiction but there are many element of truth in these pages. The best book I have read in ages.

Bought two copies - one for me, one for my daughter who is a vet. Every vet should have this book on their shelf. Made me laugh and cry for every dog I have ever owned and loved.

Comments about The Art of Racing in the Rain:

This book really makes you look at your dog in a different way. As humans, I feel we underestimate canine intelligence, and this story shows a glimpse of what we already suspect! Perhaps man's best friend can really predict illness, and he tries to communicate with us on a daily basis, only lacking the ability to form actual words. A sad but heart warming story at the same time, if you own a dog you will enjoy this amazing book!
