'I had no idea how demanding this consuming, cruel, dangerous and fascinating place would be. I would fall in love here, I would do some of my best reporting, I would be injured, ending my run of good luck - my life would change dramatically ...'

Moving to a strange city always takes courage, but never more so than in a place where the daily expression of love and hate can turn a simple choice of a romantic table by the window into a life or death decision.

Both a love story and bittersweet tribute to her beloved adopted city of Jerusalem, Irris Makler shines a hopeful light on a part of the world where the news reports often makes it seem impossibly dark. From juggling the danger and unpredictability of her work as a roving foreign correspondent , covering everything from Palestinian suicide attacks to Israeli incursions into the West Bank, to falling in love with a handsome and charming young Israeli, and gaining a mischievious four-legged companion along the way, she allows us an intimate glimpse into a passionate, vibrant and fascinating world.

Adventurous, compassionate and engagingly honest, the award-winning author of OUR WOMAN IN KABUL is a master at capturing the personal stories behind the news we really want to know - and her story is the most interesting of all.

    Comments about Hope Street, Jerusalem:

The was an extremely enjoyable easy read that made me both laugh and cry, and it was romantic and had a happy ending!! Set in Israel (where I had been just a couple of months ago) it was both personally and historically relevant. It would also make a good book for BG discussion as the situation in Israel could be discussed forever!

      Comments about Hope Street, Jerusalem:

Job, love, dog… in that order then in the lively disorder that describes life as an international radio and television correspondent.
You can't expect any of them to demand your full attention at a convenient time, but the rhythm of everyday life is so much more interesting when your quarrel is interrupted by the urgent call to cover the story of the year in Ramallah, or to go immediately to cover a riot, interview an international leader or do a !@#.

Irris Makler lives in Jerusalem where it's all happening, "too many drivers, not enough friends", you don't expect to fall in love or own a dog– especially when you live a life at such short notice.

From Moscow to Afganistan to Baghdad – we get to listen to the news from where Makler reports it – currently on location in Jerusalem

For an Australian reader, she remembers growing up a middle class time and place - in Sydney's eastern suburbs - and reflects on different choices now in the Middle East.
Idle thoughts in slow traffic are different there and stress takes another meaning: suicide bombers, checkpoints, shake-downs, bribes. Choosing a place to have coffee with your lover – better away from the window where you are less likely to be collateral damage should an event occur. Dealing with the craziness of so much hostility and hatred all in the name of god or righteousness.

Even the markets can be an ordeal of conflicting tribal advice with absolute certainty of where to shop for the best produce, the best coffee and all that with free philosophy and advice on how to run your own life.

The Old Testament records sacrifices and the evil that occurred along a road. It makes for an interesting place to walk your dog.

Hope Street Jerusalem is a witty memoir of the multi-dimensional and fascinating life of an international correspondent.
