Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings and in doing so damned himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized.

But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death but was saved, of the ones who tormented him, and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade.

Parker is not like other men. He died, and was reborn. He is ready to wage war.

Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut, and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation, and murder.

All in the name of the being they serve.

All in the name of the Dead King.

About the Author

John Connolly is the first non-American writer to win the US Shamus award and the first Irish writer to win an Edgar award. His debut - Every Dead Thing - introduced the character of Private Investigator Charlie Parker, and swiftly launched him right into the front rank of thriller writers. All his subsequent novels have been Sunday Times bestsellers.

Before becoming a novelist, he spent five years working as a journalist for The Irish Times, to which he continues to contribute. In 2007 he was awarded the Irish Post Award for Literature. Books to Die for, which he edited with Declan Burke, was the winner of the 2013 Anthony, Agatha and Macavity awards for Best Non-Fiction work.
Industry Reviews
Praise for John Connolly:

The finest crime series currently in existence - Independent on Sunday

He's compared with Stephen King because his tales have a touch of the supernatural - but crime writer John Connolly is a star in his own right - Sun

Connolly delivers what his readers have come to expect: a few belly laughs, some shivers down the spine and a compelling mystery . . . few writers can compete with him. - The Sunday Times

Connolly can always be relied upon to deliver his speciality: large-scale, darkly shaded canvases, shot through with elements of the macabre. As ever, he proves totally adept at creating American locales with the skill of a native writer, and his best writing concerning his central character is always conjured when Charlie Parker is at the end of his tether. - Good Book Guide

Thriller writers aren't always distinguished by their fine prose style, but Connolly's writing is a cut above the rest, - Herald

There is no doubt that John Connolly can spin a good yarn when it comes to what one might call "Gothic Noir". Few writers have mastered the knack of mixing horror and crime and achieved a wide popularity. I can think of Dennis Wheatley and John Blackburn, but few others. - Getting Away with Murder
