Short Stack With Bacon is a cozy mystery, featuring Betty Cain who comes home after getting a medical discharge from the Army from wounds suffered in Afghanistan while she is attached to a supply battalion. Arriving home, she immediately goes to work in the cafe owned by her grandparents, and Ward Newman comes in. They went to school together, with Betty being one class in front of Ward. Both were aware of the other back then, but nothing ever came of their mutual interest...since neither knew the other one had interest.

While they are getting to know each other better, Betty also assists Ward, who is a Detective Sergeant with the Troy, Missouri Police Department, as he works on a murder investigation.
