This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design. Bryda is a lonely, imaginative child living with her elderly grandparents while her parents are away, and the quiet, well-meaning household leaves her hungry for companionship, kittens, and adventure. Her restless spirit soon leads her into the stable loft in search of Uncle Jack's promised kittens, but a game of make-believe turns perilous when she falls into Paddy the hunter's stall and must be rescued from the horse's alarming curiosity. Even after the fright, Bryda keeps turning ordinary things into discoveries, from snails and sundials to the small dramas of daily life. Guided by her gentle, ailing cousin Salome, Bryda begins to understand that true usefulness lies in self-forgetting service and faithful effort in little things. Salome's stories of Princess Isabel and the ants teach her that even the smallest tasks can matter. New companionship arrives with cousin Maurice and his terrier Toby, and the children fill the farmyard with comic mythological adventures. Along the way, Uncle Jack's fairy tale and Bryda's encounter with a poor Italian boy named Beppo deepen the book's blend of humor, fantasy, and Christian compassion, showing a child learning how imagination, kindness, and responsibility can belong together.
