As King Edward's court shifts beneath the weight of faction and resentment, Harold moves between public duty and private grief, while Earl Godwin's household becomes the emotional center of the story. On the eve of his family's greatest triumph, Godwin confides to Githa that age is failing him and that only Harold can preserve the house against Tostig's dangerous ambition. Into this intimate world comes Hilda, the Danish Vala, speaking in grave riddles of fate, memory, and prophecy, and leaving Harold with a mysterious chest and the sense that hidden powers are steering his future. Harold's love for Edith deepens the novel's tragic undertone, as he finds her altered by illness and drawn toward the convent he cannot save her from. Meanwhile, Godwin's dramatic return to court ignites suspicion and clerical hostility, and Edward's bitter reference to Alfred drives the old earl to apoplexy and death during a public feast. Harold keeps vigil through the night, mourns his father, and then rises with remarkable steadiness: the Witan supports him, Edward confirms him as Earl of Wessex, and even Tostig must yield. Yet amid this political ascent, Edith remains pale and withdrawn, a quiet reminder of the sorrow that shadows power.
