Godwin, Earl of Wessex, rises as a masterful power behind the English throne: a self-made statesman whose family is tangled in Danish, Saxon, and royal blood, whose alliance with Canute and gift for military skill, marriage, and political eloquence made him stronger than many kings. He survives suspicion over Alfred's death, helps place Edward the Confessor on the throne, and watches a marriage between Edward and his daughter fail to bring true harmony. Around him gather his formidable sons, especially the vain, fierce Tostig and the quieter, more serious Harold. Harold emerges as rational, just, and morally grave, guided less by church ritual than by classical ideals of duty, temperance, and citizenship, though his self-reliance sometimes borders on pride. Yet he is also a man of his age, vulnerable to omens, prophecy, and destiny. His visions with Hilda—a mysterious Vala steeped in pagan memory—lead him through a nightmare of bones, accusation, warriors, ravens, stars, and a rival triumphing in the heavens, foreshadowing both coronation and conflict. The story also turns to Norman politics, as Wolnoth is sent as a hostage to William's court, stirring grief, ambition, and patriotic tension. Finally, Harold's love for Edith is shadowed by kinship laws and clerical power, forcing him to choose restraint over desire and revealing the personal cost of his public greatness.
