A Strange World opens like a stage play, setting its drama in a city of cathedral towers where beauty, hardship, and social division meet. At the center is Justina Elgood, a tired, underfed seventeen-year-old actress who longs for peace, books, music, flowers, and a real home, but is trapped in a life of backstage drudgery and dependence on the theatre for survival. Her father, Matthew Elgood, is a shabby, aging actor-manager who answers her disillusionment with vanity, self-justification, and a cynical faith in the stage as the only practical world. When Matthew and Justina are stranded outside Eborsham, two strangers intervene: James Penwyn, warm and open-hearted, and Maurice Clissold, more reserved and unsettlingly watchful. Their meeting introduces a world of provincial theatre, precarious livelihoods, and the first stirrings of attraction and rivalry. As the group makes its way back, a fortune-teller's strange reading and a scar on James's palm add a faint note of omen to the romance. James soon falls deeply in love with Justina, and beneath the moonlit cathedral he confesses his feelings and proposes marriage. Justina, shy but sincere, returns his love, and the promise of Penwyn Manor offers her escape from the harshness of stage life into domestic security and hope.
