WIRED Book Club: We're reading YouTubers, by Chris Stokel-Walker

By Victoria Turk, July 2019

Welcome to the WIRED Book Club, a series where we invite you to read along with us as we delve into recent titles that give an insight into the worlds of technology, science and business.

Here's the deal: each month we select a different non-fiction book that piques our interest, and that we think our readers will enjoy too. We'll give you roughly a month to read the book, then we'll discuss our thoughts on the WIRED UK Podcast and YouTube channel. At the same time, we'll announce the next book.

This month's book is Chris Stokel-Walker's YouTubers: How YouTube Shook Up TV and Created a New Generation of Stars. The book documents the rise of YouTube and the people who have made their names on it, tracking how the platform has changed over the years from a repository for funny home videos to a whole new facet of the entertainment industry. In doing so, it offers insight into the life of a YouTuber - at times hilarious, at others deadly serious.

Industry Reviews

I am one of the many people Stokel-Walker interviewed for this first independent look at the world's biggest video site.

The title charts YouTube's meteoric rise from a single home video, explores its ecosystem, and attempts to explain what lies behind the extraordinary success of vloggers such as KSI, PewDiePie, Zoella and Logan Paul.

It's both absorbing and highly illuminating.
