The latest epic volume in the multimillion-copy bestselling Outlander series.

It is June 1778, and the world seems to be turning upside-down. The British Army is withdrawing from Philadelphia, with George Washington in pursuit, and for the first time, it looks as if the rebels might actually win. But for Claire Fraser and her family, there are even more tumultuous revolutions that have to be accommodated.

Her former husband, Jamie, has returned from the dead, demanding to know why in his absence she married his best friend, Lord John Grey. Lord John's son, the ninth Earl of Ellesmere, is no less shocked to discover that his real father is actually the newly resurrected Jamie Fraser, and Jamie's nephew Ian Murray discovers that his new-found cousin has an eye for the woman who has just agreed to marry him.

And while Claire is terrified that one of her husbands may be about to murder the other, in the 20th century her descendants face even more desperate turns of events. Her daughter Brianna is trying to protect her son from a vicious criminal with murder on his mind, while her husband Roger has disappeared into the past . . .

I have read all 8 books in this series

Having read all 8 books in this series I am looking very much forward to a 9th book as we are left with a bit of a cliffhanger with regards to William, Jamie's son, and also the adventures of Brianna and Roger with their children upon returning to the past.

I found the whole series absolutely fantastic. I think Diana Gabaldon is a terrific writer and look forward to reading more of her work. I hope in the future a book will be written about William and what becomes of him. I felt his story was not finished. I liked all the central characters and especially "Claire and Jamies" story. Best thing I think I have ever read.

Book number 8 for me

5

I have already read the first seven books in this series and seen the first 3 seasons of the adaption. If you haven't read the books or seen the show then I wouldn't recommend purchasing this at random, you really need the background to follow it. I've thoroughly enjoyed this series and this book is shaping up to be as good as all the others! I only wish it didn't take so long for the TV series to be developed!

Diana Gabaldon

Diana Gabaldon is the author of the award-winning, #1 NYT-Bestselling Outlander novels, described by Salon magazine as the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting Scrooge McDuck comics.

The adventure began in 1991 with the classic Outlander (historical fiction with a Moebius twist), has continued through seven more New York Times-bestselling novels, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes , An Echo in the Bone, and Written in My Own Heart's Blood, with more than twenty-six million copies in print worldwide.

The series is published in 26 countries and 23 languages, and includes a nonfiction (well, relatively) companion volume, The Outlandish Companion, which provides details on the settings, background, characters, research, and writing of the first novels in the series. Gabaldon (it's pronounced GAA-bull-dohn, rhymes with stone) has also written several books in a sub-series featuring Lord John Grey (a major minor character from the main series):  Lord John and The Private Matter, Lord John and the Hand of Devils, Lord John And The Brotherhood Of The Blade, and The Scottish Prisoner.

Returning to her comic-book roots, she has also written a graphic novel titled The Exile (set within the Outlander universe and featuring the main characters from Outlander), but told from the viewpoint of Jamie Fraser and his godfather, Murtagh. The graphic novel is illustrated by Hoang Nguyen, and published by Del-Rey.

The eighth and most recent major novel in the  Outlander series, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, made its debut as number one on the New York Times bestseller list.

Diana's current writing projects include the ninth major novel in the Outlander series, as yet untitled, and a second volume of The Outlandish Companion. She is also serving as a co-producer and advisor for the Outlander TV series produced by the Starz network and Tall Ship Productions, which is based on her novels.

Diana and her husband, Douglas Watkins, have three adult children and live mostly in Scottsdale, Arizona.
