This study traces the development of women's sports from antiquity to the present. Beginning with a discussion of women's sports in ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it narrates the history of women in sports, focusing on the role of women's athletics in a cultural and social context. It then relates how "modern" sports developed. The author examines the revolution in women's sports in the last 20 years in Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. He features such modern athletes as "Babe" Didrikson, Steffi Graf, Olga Korbut, Mary Decker Slaney and Katarina Witt. He investigates various contemporary controversies including the feasibility of sports competition between women and men and the crisis created by the use of anabolic steroids. Finally, Guttmann raises the question of whether female athletes have been exploited for their sexuality.
