Mrs. Millie Mack liked to listen to her fire going crickle crackle but one winter, when she threw several pieces of wood from an old railway carriage on the fire, there were very surprising results.

The first story about Mrs Millie Mack, her cat Tom Bola, their amazing fireplace and their adventures with the express train. This book won the "CBC Picture Book of the Year" award in 1982.

About the Author

Nan Hunt is one of Australia's best loved writers of picture books and novels for young readers.

About the Illustrator

Craig Smith has been a freelance illustrator since 1976. For some of the early years he had part-time jobs - washed dishes in a restaurant, scraped rust off the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Had done drawings for advertising - groan! One interesting job he had was working as a nurse's aide in a hospital for the elderly. In that role he was able to observe the human body - something artists would usually do in a life drawing session. This experience stayed with him and affected the characterisation of his work.

Nice story, lovely illustration

Lovely imaginative story but I would read this more to a 4-5 year old than to a younger child - beautiful illustrations

Captivating

Service and delivery both excellent. The website very effective in its prompts for titles that may be of interest in various categories. It's just like browsing in an actual bookshop ... which my deteriorating mobility makes a real challenge. I feel somewhat guilty about this, as I think those independent bookshops are so important, and they are in peril. But, as with publishing, these are revolutionary times.

I bought this book to read to my children, loved it so much I bought a copy to give to the preschool. Great book, lots of imagination, illustrations are amazing, and the author is Australian! Highly recommend this book, makes a great gift, probably one book that most children don't have.

This is an excellent book with lots of repeating phrases. Well worth reading and once you have you will want to add it to your shelves.

I bought this book when it was first published many years ago. As a teacher I found the children loved the story and the repetition used. I have now purchased extra copies as gifts for the children who have successfully completed my Reading Recovery Program. Always a favourite!

This is a fabulous book to take your children or grand children in to. Using your imagination is one of the best things you can teach a young child to do.Good books keep a child entertained and this one did it for my grand children.
