'Put your lipstick on, begin the day. It will start without you anyway.'

'What will I wear to your funeral?'

'And how do I look after your orchid?'

Kellie wanted to ask so many questions while she still could. But how do you say goodbye forever? That one didn't bear thinking about. When her mother Pamela is diagnosed with cancer, their family plead with her to try everything that might give them all more time. She reluctantly agrees, but on one condition. Life goes on because it has to and so does the weekly family dinner with wine and loud sibling banter. With grace, guts and cups of tea the matriarch prepares herself and those she loves for the inevitable.

Their conversations are honest, funny and at times confronting, where a shade of lipstick is the only bright side. This is a toast to love, friendship and the ordinary. There is no happy ending but the Curtain family discovers there can be 'good' in goodbye. And it somehow leaves them feeling just a little victorious. Now put on the kettle and open the wine.

Industry Reviews

"It is deeply moving but not trite and answers questions I didn't even realise I had about dying. I cried, laughed and it made me assess my own relationships."

"It made me want to spend some wine fuelled evenings with the Curtains"

"This is a love story. I feared that my own experience of loss would make reading about the intimacy of dying too painful but it is done in a way that I actually I found it comforting."

"I love reading books you just can't put down and this was one of them!"

"It's like a two way experience. An extraordinary feeling and I felt healing for my own grief. That's quite an achievement."

"I never re-read books but I know there will be a time when I will want to re-read this one."

"It had me sucked in from the very beginning and I read it like a speeding train."

"I am heading out to buy myself a new lipstick today."

Such a good read - but pack the tissues!

Very well written . Perhaps an excellent resource for someone travelling on a similar journey. Funny, sad, inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An emotional guide on losing a loved one

Beautifully written book about the difficult subject of death, we always avoid speaking about. This is an insightful way to manage many of the issues and questions that are raised when a loved one is going through a terminal illness.

qhat will i wear to you funeral

i wanted to know how i could talk about my own terminal illness with my daughters especially one of them, everything i wanted to know was answered and more, but in a down to earth sad but fun way, brilliant warm and lovingly written

A great life affirming book about ..... death.

I really loved this family's story about the death of their much loved Mum. The subject of death is something most of us avoid thinking about, but this author shows us that death is just an extension of life. And, like life, death (& this book) can be funny, uplifting, crazy, heart breaking (of course) but mostly life affirming. The characters all felt very real to me - I'd love to pull up a chair at one of their raucous dinners (if only I I could keep up with their witty repartee!) I didn't want the book to end, I'd love to the author to let us know whats happening with her family now. I finished this book with a smile on my face. It made me feel that, at the end of the day, what is really important in life is family, friends and love - with a good dash of wine and lipstick thrown in!
