This volume examines the degree to which violence - however defined - has influenced political change across the region. The contributions include analyses of the ramifications of violent disorder in Angola and Mozambique, the impact on the political economy of both states and the prospects for lasting peace following the end of civil war. A second theme is the significance of conflict in southern Africa, both past and present, focusing on KwaZulu-Natal, the urban areas of the Witwatersrand and the rising crime rates in the cities. In addition, a comparative evaluation of the armed struggle in Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe is offered together with a discussion of the prospects for a new security regime in southern Africa following the elimination of apartheid as a source of aggression against the Republic's neighbours.
