Violence in southern Africa has occurred in a variety of modes; ethnic confrontation; liberation struggles; cross-border aggression and crime. This volume examines the degree to which violence, however, defined, has promoted or retarded political change across the region. The contributions include an analysis of the ramifications of violent disorder in Angola and Mozambique, the impact on the political economy of both states and the prospects for lasting peace following the end of civil war.
A second theme is the significance of the conflict with past and present in South Africa, focusing on KwaZulu-Natal, the urban areas of the Witwatersrand and the rising crime rates in the cities. In addition, a comparative evaluation of the armed struggle in Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe is offered together with a discussion of the prospects for new security regimes in southern Africa following the elimination of Apartheid as a source of aggression against the Republic's neighbours.
