The first volume to investigate Van Gogh's fascination with depicting the undergrowth or "sous-bois".

In his own words he strove to paint "in such a way that one could breathe and walk about in it and smell the wood itself." This beautiful new book reveals just how central capturing the changing effects of light on forest leaves and foliage was in Van Gogh's art, and how important it was to him in defining himself as an artist.

• Features works by Van Gogh and his contemporaries from a wide range of US, European and private, institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Musee du Louvre, Paris, Musee d'Orsay, Paris, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, and the Collection Kroller-Muller Museum.
• Presents extensive new research on the sous-bois genre.
• Brings this little known and understudied area of his work to the wider attention of general art lovers, as well as specialists.
