In this work, Linda Rabben draws on her own experiences working in Brazil with indigenous groups as both anthropologist and activist with Amnesty International and Sting's Rainforest Foundation. She traces the history of two Brazilian indigenous groups, the Kayapo and the Yanomami, who have become internationally famous as a result of their dramatic encounters with the outside world. The Kayapo have transcended internal divisions in a struggle to preserve their traditional culture and protect their natural patrimony while benefiting from the goods and services that civilization provides. The Yanomami were decimated by a genocidal assault on their territory by goldminers from 1987-91. With the help of non-indigenous allies, they are still struggling to unite and to survive outside impingement and government neglect. This account looks not only at the history of these groups, but also focuses in particular on the well-known leaders, Paulinho Payakan of the Kayapo, and Davi Yanomami of the Yanomami.
