Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature is a new series in English dealing with early Jewish literature between the third century BC and the middle of the second century AD; it is scheduled to encompass a total of 58 volumes. The texts are intended to be interpreted as a textual unity against the background of their particular Jewish and historico-political contexts, with text-based, historical, literary and theological analyses being undertaken. The first volume, by Joseph A. Fitzmyer, is devoted to a commentary on the Book of Tobit (Tobias).

"Quest'opera inaugura in modo eccellente una nuova serie di commentari sulla letterature giudaica antica. [...] un'opera di grande valore e utitlita, che rappresentera un punto di riferimento imprescindibile, in particolare per lo studio del testo di Tobia."Flavio Dalla Vecchia in: Rivista Biblica LIV/2006 "Every student of Second Temple Judaism will be grateful for this commentary. On philological and textual issues, there is no more reliable guide than Fitzmayer. He has provided scholars with a solid base for future work. Many questions remain open regarding date, provenance, literary genre, and composition. But Fitzmayer's commentary will be a primary reference work on Tobit for scholars who wish to ponder these issues."John J. Collins in: Journal of Near Eastern Studies 4/2005 "... if you want a careful and up-to-date commentary on the ancient witness to the Book of Tobit from a authoritative scholar, this volume will fit the bill perfectly."Jeremy Corley in: Journal of Jewish Studies 1/2004 "Der detailreiche Band wird kunftig in Verbindung mit Christian J. Wagners Tobit-Synopse fur jede weitere Forschung am Tobit-Buch unentbehrlich sein."B. Ego in: ZAW 2004
