It's the end of the 70s in suburban Southern California and newly-turned 13-year-old Eliza Mills witnesses with angst as a lumber company chops down her beloved tree, her first best friend. This tree where she climbed to the very top, sat and thought and wondered. Now what will she do? Who will listen, who will help, who will make everything okay again? Certainly not her seriously smart best friend Paisley Park. Probably not any of her distracted older brothers. Doubtfully her father who doesn't even think girls like Eliza should climb trees. And most definitely not her mother who stands by appalled at her only daughter's rejection of the name on her birth certificate. What's up there, out there? she wonders. If there is a god, why has he - or she - taken away what and who she loves? Perhaps some help lies inside a mysterious box left behind by her dying grandfather. After experiencing several magical happenings around her, she is convinced that her grandfather is trying to send her one final message. What secrets does he want to share? This box remains her last (and obsessive) hope. What will its contents reveal?

Read this if you are a girl!

I am 13 and really liked this book, This Girl Climbs Trees. The narrator, Eliza Mills, sounded mature for 13 in some ways but also just regular. She seemed real to me. I love books like this that move slowly and don't have a lot of special fantasy stuff going on. This is a book for girls who like to read stories they can relate to.
