Miss Rich's sixth book is her finest, strong and contained, the poems emblems of fury, love, sadness, loss. The strongest, most passionate is "Shooting Script," a very long, fragmented poem - not as the publisher announces, "a new poetic form": that has some of the best lines Miss Rich has ever written - "An ear filled with one sound only" or "Somewhere my body goes taut under the deluge, somewhere I am/ naked/ behind the lines, washing my body in the water of that war." "Images for Godard" is also exceptional, full of adventure and invention.
