"The Will to Change must be read whole: for its tough distrust of completion and for its cool declaratives which fix us with a stare more unsettling than the most hysterical questions...It includes moments when poverty and heroism explode grammer with their own dignified unsyntactical demands...The poems are about departures, about the pain of breaking away from lovers and from an old sense of self. They discover the point where loneliness and politics touch, where the exercise of the radical courage takes its inevitable toll."--David Kalstone in The New York Times Book Review

Industry Reviews

Miss Rich's sixth book is her finest, strong and contained, the poems emblems of fury, love, sadness, loss. The strongest, most passionate is "Shooting Script," a very long, fragmented poem - not as the publisher announces, "a new poetic form": that has some of the best lines Miss Rich has ever written - "An ear filled with one sound only" or "Somewhere my body goes taut under the deluge, somewhere I am/ naked/ behind the lines, washing my body in the water of that war." "Images for Godard" is also exceptional, full of adventure and invention. Then there is "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning," an intriguing journey into the acceptance of death and in a way the wisest poem here. Altogether an outstanding collection. (Kirkus Reviews)
