Zaire is currently undergoing the longest transition from one-party dictatorship to multiparty democracy in Africa. The transition process has hit many snags and obstacles, including armed conflict and the plight of Rwandan refugees in eastern Zaire. This book provides a useful analysis of the historical background, as well as the sociological context, necessary for understanding the current situation in Zaire and the prospects for peaceful change in Central Africa. It shows that some of the major contradictions inherent in the transition to democracy can be traced to the impact of Belgian colonialism in Zaire. More profoundly, the book focuses on the implications for democracy of the destruction of Zaire's economic and social fabric during three decades of Mobutu's dictatorship.
