The collaboration of Gary Crew (award winning Australian author) and Paul O'Sullivan has resulted in an innovative and interesting account of the story of Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the Loch Ard, an iron hulled clipper wrecked off the coast of Victoria in 1878. I grew up knowing the story of Grace Bussell and her efforts to rescue the passengers from the wreck of the SS Georgette in Western Australia two years earlier in 1876 but was unaware of Eva's story. By engaging with Eva as the narrator the author explores the voyage from Gravesend to Australia. Eva's brooding gives rise to a sense of foreboding that tragedy will strike and strike it does when the Loch Ard is hurled upon the rocks on the Shipwreck Coast in Southeastern Victoria. A story based on an historical event, demonstrating Eva's indomitable spirit and a will to survive. The story of Eva Carmichael forms part of Victoria's history.
