The Sociology and Professionalization of Economics contains essays on the social nature of economics as a science; on the origin and history of some of the institutions which have done most to shape the development of the discipline; and on economics as a profession. As with the other volumes in the series there is particular emphasis on the similarity and differences between economics and economists in Britain and in North America. The volume is divided into three parts. The first addresses issues in the sociology of economics, including possible applications of ideas from the soicology of knowledge and of science to economics and the importance of journals to the discipline. The second includes pioneering work on the establishment and development of such important institutions as the American Economic Association and the Royal Economic Society. The Book concludes with essays on economics as a profession with particular emphasis to the role of economists in government.
Industry Reviews
"For decades Bob Coats has been contributing in the journals to an extraordinary range of the most important issues from Mercantilism to Marshall and from American Institutional to economists in government. It is very good news indeed, for those interested in the history and method of economics that the Coats "oeuvre is now to be collected in a more permanent form." -T.W. Hutchison, University of Birmingham "Bob Coats describes himself as a victim of multiple intellectual schizophrenia. Coats has made important contributions in such areas as intellectual history and the methodology of economics, economic history and the sociology of science. His affliction has been a boon for the rest of the profession." -Bruce J. Caldwell, University of North Carolina, Greensboro "He was the single figure who by exhortation and example managed to keep the sociology of economics alive . . . His work on the early British economics profession will outlive most of the histories of economic thought that have been written in the last twenty years. His urbane style and Catholic tastes are an inspiration to us all." -Philip Mirowski, University of Notre Dame
