Beginners and experienced birdwatchers turn to this guide to identify the birds they see in their backyards and on bushwalking or birdwatching expeditions. Designed to slip easily into a pocket, backpack or glove box.

This is a new and updated version of the very popular Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds and includes 64 new or extensively revised colour plates, incorporating all the new birds observed in Australia, including Tasmania and islands and territories since 1986. Also included is a re-organisation of the guide into broad habitats - seabirds, shore birds, inland water birds and bush birds; updated common and scientific names, revised maps, and a new visual index to aid beginners in finding the most appropriate pages in the guide. A must for serious naturalists in Australia, be they beginners or experts.

OK, well I obviously haven't read the whole thing: it's a reference book. But I have had it for years (Christmas 1990) and it's a brilliant book to have on the shelf. Recently we have been taking Mum to the duck pond to get her out of the Care Facility and there are quite a lot of different ducks and birds. I wanted to know what the one with the red beak and frontal shield and the blue breast was. Because of the great colour plates, I was able to flick through and identify it from pp96-97 as an Eastern Swamp Hen. Also the Dusky Moorhen and the Eurasian Coot. It will stay on my shelves.

Glad I bought it.

Interested in birds so found the book helpful, but not easy to find a particular bird unless you have some idea of what you're looking for. It's like a bird dictionary ... you have to have a starting point to know where to look. But it's still useful and interesting.

Very good. The only problem is the index.

3

The index assumes you know what you you are looking for. For example, you look-up Dron.. so you can go to the page - no chance. You have to know the exact description, so in this example you have to look under S as it's S< whatever>Dron.. - go figure. And the Latin descriptions are about as much use as Roman numerals. PS This review is so pathetic I cannot type the actual name of the bird - a beautiful black (whoops can I use that word) bird that is very acrobatic. Apparently the real name is a profanity !

A must have for any bird lovers

Has a plastic cover to protect it when you use it hiking outdoors and solidly constructed so can deal with being thrown in the backpack or jacket pocket. When not hiking its on our kitchen bench so we can identify birds in our garden
