Review by Sarah McDuling

It’s been a long time between reads for all the rabid Michael Robotham fans out there (myself included). We haven’t had a new Robotham book since Close Your Eyes in 2015. Fortunately, The Secrets She Keeps is such stunning thriller that I can say with absolute honestly… it was well worth the wait!

This is the story of two pregnant women from very different walks of life. Both are struggling with family problems. Each has a secret they are trying to keep, and each is desperate to prevent the truth from destroying their happiness.

Meg lives in a picture-perfect world of domestic bliss, wealth and privilege. She’s beautiful, talented, and has a handsome husband, two gorgeous children and a third bundle of joy on the way. She also runs a popular “mummy blog” where she writes endearingly funny stories about the trials of motherhood.

Meanwhile, Agatha has a job stacking shelves in a supermarket. She has a creepy boss, an estranged mother and a much younger ex-boyfriend/baby-daddy who is not overly pleased about becoming a father. She’s haunted by a troubled past but hopeful for a happy future. She’s also in the habit of watching Meg – admiring and envying her from afar.

When Meg and Agatha meet, their lives become entwined in ways both unexpected and dangerous. At the same time, the secrets they are trying so hard to keep hidden begin to unravel at an alarming rate…

The Secrets She Keeps is another absolute cracker from Michael Robotham, certain to please longtime fans and newcomers alike. This riveting standalone psychological thriller not only kept me on tenterhooks as I frantically turned pages, it also played merry havoc with my emotions. A deeply compelling and thoroughly addictive read!

Industry Reviews

Will have you turning the pages compulsively - The Times

Robotham doesn't just make me scared for his characters, he makes my heart ache for them.

Superbly exciting ... a terrific read - Guardian

LIFE OR DEATH is a nerve-shredding thriller with the heart and soul so often missing from lesser crime and suspense novels. I couldn't stop reading, yet I didn't want Audie's story to end. Robotham is an absolute master.

Heart-stopping, heart-breaking and heart-wrenching

He writes in a voice with a haunting sense of soul

The Secrets She Keeps is a tense, chilling and disturbing psychological thriller about secrets, obsession and the longing for the "perfect life" from a master of the genre. Very highly recommended! - But Books are Better Blog

This was my first Robotham read & wow I'm not sure why! I really enjoyed this book. While I did pick some things early on it was still a very thrilling ride where you didn't know what would happen next. As a mother myself my heart was in my throat for much of it! I will definitely hand sell this title! - Bookseller Angus and Robinson

A bridge to far

This book was chosen for our bookclub so I have perservered and tried to finish it. A psychological thriller it might be but I just found it too unbelievable and not to my taste at all. I have read and enjoyed other books of Michael Rowbotham.

Michael Robotham

About the Author

Born in Australia in November 1960, Michael Robotham grew up in small country towns that had more dogs than people and more flies than dogs. He escaped in 1979 and became a cadet journalist on an afternoon newspaper in Sydney.

For the next fourteen years he wrote for newspapers and magazines in Australia, Britain and America. As a senior feature writer for the UK's Mail on Sunday he was among the first people to view the letters and diaries of Czar Nicholas II and his wife Empress Alexandra, unearthed in the Moscow State Archives in 1991. He also gained access to Stalin's Hitler files, which had been missing for nearly fifty years until a cleaner stumbled upon a cardboard box that had been misplaced and misfiled.

In 1993 he quit journalism to become a ghostwriter, collaborating with politicians, pop stars, psychologists, adventurers and showbusiness personalities to write their autobiographies. Twelve of these non-fiction titles were bestsellers with combined sales of more than 2 million copies.

His first novel The Suspect, a psychological thriller, was chosen by the world's largest consortium of book clubs as only the fifth International Book of the Month, making it the top recommendation to 28 million book club members in fifteen countries. It has been translated into twenty-two languages, including some he's barely heard of.

His second novel Lost won the Ned Kelly Award for the Crime Book of the Year in 2005, given by the Australian Crime Writers Association. It was also shortlisted for the 2006 Barry Award for the BEST BRITISH NOVEL published in the US in 2005.

Michael's subsequent novels The Night Ferry and Shatter were both shortlisted for UK Crime Writers Association Steel Dagger in 2007 and 2008. Shatter was also shortlisted in the inaugural ITV3 Thriller Awards in the UK and for South Africa's Boeke Prize. In August 2008 Shatter won the Ned Kelly award for Australia's best crime novel. Bleed for Me, Michael's sixth novel, Bleed for Me was shortlisted for the 2010 Ned Kelly Award.

Michael can most often be found working in his 'pit of despair' (basement office) on Sydney's northern beaches where he funds the extravagant lifestyles of a wife and three daughters.
