The biography of James Packer.

James Packer turns to Greek mythology in an attempt to explain the most exciting yet tumultuous period of his 50 years on earth. "I was like Icarus," the billionaire tells his biographer, journalist Damon Kitney, of the heady days of 2016 when he broke up with pop star Mariah Carey, abandoned living in Hollywood and Israel, left the global casino stage, and divided the family fortune in a bitter separation from his sister.

"I flew too close to the sun."

With these words, Packer delves for the first time into the story behind his stunning public revelation in mid-March 2018 of his battle with mental health issues, which forced him to resign from the board of the Crown casino company he owns and loves.

Never before has a member of the Packer family co-operated with a writer to tell their story. In his biography, The Price of Fortune, one of the nation's richest and most psychoanalysed men opens up in an attempt to make sense of his rollercoaster life and to tell the human story of being James Douglas Packer. Of how his wealth, charm and intellect took him to such exciting places. Yet how his trusting the wrong people and his rash actions cost him his friends, his health and, most importantly, his reputation on the global stage - and how he is now working on getting it back.

Industry Reviews

"Kitney’s documenting of James Packer’s unbelievable life is highly readable. He manages to tread the fine line between documenting the bizarre spectacle that is Packer’s life, and eliciting sympathy for this man of extraordinary wealth."- John McDuling, Sydney Morning Herald

Very fascinating story of an iconic Australian family

This book is very well written and gives a brilliant and fascinating insight an iconic Australian family. It demonstrates the pitfalls that James lives with on a day-to-day basis, and details his rise, fall and then rise again with mental health. It also shows some insight into Kerry Packer's runnings of CMH and other Packer family businesses which I found very well explained. I have given this book recently as a gift to a friend also.

Ok read

The subject is fascinating but the writing lets the book down. Had no clear direction and jumped between years often. Disappointing.

Really disappointing read....

I found this book terrible. From the start, the fact Packer participated but didn't endorse it creates suspicion. Here's a guy who has manipulated others, publicly and privately, to his own end - it's hard to believe this book is anything other than attempt to write a public narrative that is helpful to JAMES. All this book has done is remind me of how ludicrous the NSW Government decision to grant Crown an exclusive option on a second casino in SYDNEY was. No due process and with the loss of massive value for the residents of NSW. That was a dog better left to lie but it's all dressed up here again - surely it's time for a public enquire into the enablers that gave Packer this free option. Thankfully, I'm not a Crown shareholder or I'd be livid at how Packer has treated those investors. The rest is fluff, feeling like it was mostly lifted from Woman's Day or New Idea. This work is a poor reflection inn samon Kitney's body of work, which was outstanding when he worked at The Australian. Hope he sees the light and goes back to real journalism, if he can sustain himself without the patronage.....

This will be a good read.

I chose this book for myself from my busy husband as I did much of our Christmas shopping this year with Booktopia! I am very interested in James Packer as, while it may seem he has an extraordinary life, it seems like all of us, he can go through rough times too. I know there are things he, and his father before him, do for good which goes without accolade.
