The Portuguese Economy Towards 1992 addresses the issues and problems faced by Portugal as it approaches European economic integration in 1992. Chapters are based on papers presented at a conference held in Vimeiro, Portugal, on March 23 and 24, 1991, and address topics which include business cycles, the European Monetary System, foreign direct investment and trade. In addition, a group of chapters focuses on labor issues: wage gaps, mobility and productivity. This analysis of the highly open and semi-developed Portuguese economy will serve as a relevant model for other economies having to deal with integration.

Business cycles in Portugal - theory and evidence, I. Horta Correia et al; financial liberalization and adhesion to EMS - dynamics of adjustment in Portugal, M. Antao and P. Brito; foreign entry and domestic welfare, with an application to Portuguese life-insurance, P.P. Barros and L.M.B. Cabral; concentration and competitive dynamics, J. Mata; why are wages in Portugal lower than elsewhere in the EEC?, F. Branco and A.S. Mello; some aspects of the Portuguese labour market 1977-1988 - neutrality, hysteresis and the wage gap, L. Modesto et al; trade-off between emigration and remittances in the Portuguese economy, A.M. Pereira; labour supply in an environment with emigration - an empirical study of the Portuguese case, J.P.
