Industry Reviews

Praise for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: 'In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best ... tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting' -
Time Magazine

'An absorbing, exciting read ... Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages' -
The Times

'The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads ... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias' -

'Colossal, staggering ... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world ... The writing is always powerful ...' -

Creative Mindfulness

When all of the things that need doing are done for the day, this is a nice treat to reward yourself with. I never thought that I would be the type of person to catch onto this seemingly popular 'trend' for adults, but as it turns out, it seems that I was surprisingly mistaken! As a person who enjoys the arts (painting, drawing, handwork), I was surprised at how much I enjoyed not worrying about the composition of the artwork, having only to think of colour schemes and shading techniques. I'm even considering getting another one...

A fun way to enjoy Game on Thrones through winter!

So lovely to look at and almost too beautiful to colour! The pictures and detailing are lovely and the accompanying text will be recognised by Game of Thrones devotees and maybe even those who live outside of Westeros and Essos!! Such a lovely thing I don't even want to mark it in case I ruin the gorgeous illustrations! Bit crazy seeing it is a colouring book. Great for collectors!

Great cover, but...

Colouring books are excellent for relaxing, but there are a large number now available so they have to be interesting to make colouring them worthwhile. In this one the drawings are clear and a few are what I anticipated, ie. they are similar in style to that on the cover. Unfortunately there are insufficient of these and more of the mundane shield and heraldic designs, which while they don't appeal to me, may interest male colourists.

Game of thrones

As I have had recent cataract surgery the colouring in book is a great challenge, I enjoy it very much

George R. R. Martin

About the Author

George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: "The Hero," sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.

In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
