A book which offers a new understanding of the causes of pain, and how to manage them.

Nearly half of us at some point in our lives will suffer chronic pain. We go to the doctor, where the standard treatment on offer is either medication - which only masks the problem - or surgery - which can make things worse.

For osteopath Nick Potter, the reason why traditional medicine doesn’t work is because chronic pain often has less to do with twisted muscles and more to do with far deeper-rooted anxieties.

One of the leading experts on pain in all its forms, Potter has had 25 years’ clinical experience of treating people – ranging from elite athletes and hedge-funders to over-stretched families – who come to him with real symptoms and real physical pain for which there appears to be no root cause.

In this fascinating book, he takes us on a journey into biology, evolution and contemporary social behaviour and anthropology to examine our relationship with pain. He presents his own roadmap for wellbeing (including his acclaimed theory of breathing), along with success stories from the consulting room, and shows us how to spot the signs and break the vicious cycle of stress, pain and anxiety before the damage is done.

About the Author

Nick Potter started training in medicine until a bad back injury forced him to rethink how exactly pain and injury work in the body. He has been an osteopath for 25 years and specialises in the treatment of injury by addressing the causes of pain.

Industry Reviews

`The man who taught me how to breathe,' Sir Elton John

`Nick Potter is an exceptional osteopath, and has an extraordinary ability to instantly know what I have been doing wrong physically to cause me pain and then alleviate it. I am certain that if I followed all his advice and did all the exercises he wants me to do I would never be in pain again. Unfortunately I am too lazy, which is why I'm booked in again with him next Thursday at 2pm!' Michael McIntyre

`In this excellent, well informed and optimistic book, Nick Potter helps readers understand the experience of pain, and shows that there is a surprising amount they can do on their own to address and manage it. It is a pleasure to read.' Professor Robert Bor
