This #1 New York Times best-selling guide to decluttering your home from Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes readers step-by-step through her revolutionary KonMari Method for simplifying, organizing, and storing.

Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?

Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo's clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).

With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house "spark joy" (and which don't), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo's newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home-and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

She has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by "Time," featured on more than thirty major Japanese television and radio programs, and profiled in the "Sunday Times," "Red" magazine, "You" magazine, the "New York Times," "USA Today," NPR's "Here & Now," "Slate," "Family Circle," and the "LondonTimes," who has deemed her Japan s preeminent guru of tidiness, a warrior princess in the war on clutter.

This is a book that just about everyone I have ever met could learn from. It may seem like just a book about tidying but the way in which one can so simply transform their lives from confused and cluttered to peaceful and spacious is mind blowing. Others have written such books but this one comes from a completely different perspective. It teaches the art of finding joy instead of simply discarding or storing. It is the true Japanese art of transformation, outer reflection and letting go.

I suspect the mere decision to purchase this book results in bigger actions around decluttering your life than immersion in the book itself. I found it difficult to trust the author's stealth mode of operation for she recounts, amongst her childhood 'tidying' urges, judging a selection of her siblings' belongings as clutter, hiding those belongings and then secretly throwing them out. Imagine living with such a woman. Whew. I couldn't help noting the irony of 4-million copies of this book now cluttering people's lives. The style of writing is repetitive, belabouring worthwhile underlying messages. Nevertheless, even before the book -- thanks to a gifted book voucher -- arrived, I was seized with the urge to conduct a major clean-out (my own belongings!), and changed how I stored my clothes. It felt good.

Comments about The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up:

I love how this is written and would suggest the reader go and have a look at the author on Youtube first, then you may understand the Japanese way of thinking. The serenity of folding for instance, the Spark Joy concept. It helps to understand this and makes the book easier to understand. Folding for instance, has become a happier time and not a job! I would never have thought I would write that sentence!

For the first time ever, I FINALLY have a house that is actually organised! I never seemed to be able to "catch up" , always something that needed doing. Now I have space in my cupboards, drawers, and the clutter is gone. Love it!

I feel like this book is the only one you should buy if you're wanting to keep all your stuff organised. I don't know how anyone else could top this. It totally changed the way I look at my stuff, even though I'm not someone who hoards much or is very messy. I think it would work on almost anyone.

Comments about The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up:

I was able to use this book, and continue to, as a "go to" reference book for de-cluttering and organizing my house. But, this book is more than a de-cluttering and tidying up book. Marie Kondo gets you to look at who you are and what needs are missing, in a very gentle but honest way; in the process you get your space tidied and de-cluttered. The best parts for me was the "paperwork" and clothing sections. I have no use for a filing cabinet anymore except to perhaps use as another set of drawers, which i don't need as i have way less clothes than before starting the book. One small downside is that Marie doesn't provide diagrams for her folding techniques, which for a visual person such as myself, would have made a huge difference.
