The book that heralded the arrival of a European superstar!

Geralt is a witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin. Yet he is no ordinary murderer: his targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent. He roams the country seeking assignments, but gradually comes to realise that while some of his quarry are unremittingly vile, vicious grotesques, others are the victims of sin, evil or simple naivety.

One reviewer said: 'This book is a sheer delight. It is beautifully written, full of vitality and endlessly inventive: its format, with half a dozen episodes and intervening rest periods for both the hero and the reader, allows for a huge range of characters, scenarios and action. It's thought-provoking without being in the least dogmatic, witty without descending to farce and packed with swordfights without being derivative. The dialogue sparkles; characters morph almost imperceptibly from semi-cliche to completely original; nothing is as it first seems. Sapkowski succeeds in seamlessly welding familiar ideas, unique settings and delicious twists of originality: his Beauty wants to rip the throat out of a sensitive Beast; his Snow White seeks vengeance on all and sundry, his elves are embittered and vindictive. It's easily one of the best things I've read in ages.'

About the Author

Andrzej Sapkowski was born in 1948 in Poland. He studied economy and business, but the success of his fantasy cycle about the sorcerer Geralt of Rivia turned him into a bestselling writer and he is now one of Poland's most famous and successful authors, selling more in his own country than Stephen King or Michael Crichton.

Fantasy at its finest

Be transported to a world of magic and warring states. A land of monsters and those trained to kill them. Follows Geralt, a witcher who has been trained and genetically mutated to kill monsters, and his adventures as he is drawn into royal intrigue, faction disputes with mages and sorceresses and being an unlikely guardian. A beautifully crafted world with strong characters and the best ending I have read in a long time.

Great Introduction

If you have played the games, this book is a great intro to the series. It is an actual collection of short stories, so I see this as a pre-series warm up, I guess. It is an interesting way to introduce the reader to a new word.

Read after playing The Witcher 3

Picked this up after finishing the game and wanting a bit more of the Witcher's world. I struggled to put this down. Heaps of things that get referenced in the game are fleshed out here, so if you're interested in Geralt's backstory then don't hesitate to grab it. Hell, even if you have no interest in the videogames, this is still an amazing piece of fantasy narrative with references to real-world folk stories. Needless to say, after reading the first book, I went out and purchased the set and am now reading the entire collection. One word of advice, check up on the order that they're meant to be read in before starting as there's no clear ordering system in the books. This is the first of two short stories (The second being Sword of Destiny) and I'd advise starting with The Last Wish before seeking out any others.

A really good collection of short stories

This book is a collection of short stories. Each short story is fun, thrilling, amusing and just really good. If you're a fan of the Witcher games, then this will really appeal to you.

to fill in the gaps

this was a good read if youve played the witcher 3 game. it fills in some of the story gaps that they let you speculate about. id only recommend this to a fan of the witchers universe though.
