This study throws light on a neglected but very important aspect of Jewish life in the Third Reich - the Jewish press - the sixty-five newspapers and magazines published by the fifty-three publishing houses with a specific German-Jewish readership in mind. These publications appeared until the end of 1938 and provide a valuable insight into the situation of the German Jews under the Nazi regime. They movingly document the efforts of the Jews to cope with the increasing precariousness of their existence in Germany and to find solutions to the growing problems of survival.
Industry Reviews

"... anyone interested in contemporary history will read [this book] with profit, and it certainly is a must for every university library." --Jewish Chronicle

"One can quote endlessly from this fascinating and meticulously annotated book, which has received an excellent English translation. Recommended." --The Jerusalem Post Magazine

"... an invaluable contribution to the study of Jewish cultural life in Germany during the Nazi years. With its thorough documentation, The Jewish Press in the Third Reich prepares the ground for further research." --German Politics and Society

"... he succeeds in using the Jewish press to provide a valuable entree into the inner life of a community that was restored to vitality, largely in spite of itself and only on the brink of its demise." --Central European History

"(a) sensitive and informative study... The great merit of this work by the Israeli scholar who thirty years ago wrote the standard work on the Jewish Kulturbund is that he treats the subject thematically and chronologically...

All forms of Jewish culture, including the press, experienced a brief renaissance during the eyars from 1933 to 1938 as the majority of German Jews, who were completely assimilated, were driven back into increasing isolation. This fascinating sutdy provides striking evidence of this. Berg publishers are to be congratulated for making it available in a good translation to a wider reading public not conversant with German." --German History
