It's been a long and at times difficult journey for the man born Jeffrey Leo Newton. His seemingly normal world was turned on its head when at an early age he was diagnosed with Spina Bifida - many challenging and at times life threatening illnesses and long periods of hospitalisation followed.

Despite this, his extra-ordinary singing talent soon surfaced. A child prodigy, he made his first professional appearance aged 5 singing at his Aunty Betty and Uncle Thomas' wedding. As a teenager, he did what many of us dream about and ran away from home, until a friendly policeman put him back on the straight and narrow. By age 15 he had secured a guest spot on Channel Nine's TV teen talent showcase, Opportunity Knocks, hosted by Desmond Tester, and appeared regularly on the show between 1961 and 1963.

From an early age, he refused to see Spina Bifida as a disability or use it as an excuse to prevent him achieving his goals. Many things were beyond his control and with his mobility deteriorating in early 1965; he had no option but to exchange his leg calipers for crutches. This setback did little to deter him and he soon joined his first band. On record, Jeff St John is best remembered for scorching, brass-laden smash singles like "Big Time Operator" and "Teach Me How To Fly".

At the peak of his popularity, Jeff underwent a series of complicated operations that resulted in loss of mobility and him becoming wheelchair-bound. Undeterred, Jeff soon returned to live performance and transformed what many saw as a 'liability' into his own trademark, executing 'wheelies' and 'pirouettes' across the stage as he sang.

But beneath his successful public persona was a struggling soul striving to find love and overcome personal demons. Finally, unable to cope with the roller coaster of one broken relationship after another, he succumbed to self-doubt and attempted the ultimate act of self-criticism - suicide.

His is a story of inspiration, passion, rocknroll, hit singles, fame, drugs, séances, broken marriages, self doubt, attempted suicide, triumph and finally true love...

Jeffrey St.John has written a wonderful book of his life story, with the subtitle, 'The Inside Outsider'. (love it!).This is not your average self-serving autobiography, but the work of a passionate and incredibly gifted performer. This book is about Jeff St John from childhood, in Camperdown N.S.W., to today in Perth W.A...And what a journey it's been.As a reader you are taken into Jeffrey's childhood in a vivid depiction of his struggles, surrounded by his large and supporting family. The loneliness and frustration he felt,as his health deteriorated over the years must have been exteme, but their is no self pity here. There is though, beautifully written reminisce of a life lived fully. And Jeff is one master wordsmith! For the unititiated he uses his enormous vocabulary to it's fullest, complete with the meanings of some of the 'tougher' words. He shows great humour and doesn't shy away from his not so likeable side,(which we all have) but confronts his life and career honestly.Plenty here for the Music lovers,of course.Though this to me is the story of a man who overcame,(finally) his demons and carved a new life of happiness and contentment..Of which he richly deserves. The book itself is one of the best presented I have seen.Incredibly produced in beautiful paper and cover, the photo's are magnificent.(It's Eye-Candy,just to browse through)..My final comment..After reading it,I felt even more so than before, that Jeff St John deserves a place in Rock and Roll History as one of the greats...who could have been legendary worldwide.Inspirational.

Unlike some "rock and roll" autobiographies which I have read, this one really lets the reader learn about the person and not just the rock and roll persona. For a someone born with a disability St John has led an exceptional life, never letting anything hold him back for long and he tells his story in a way that transports the reader to the time, place and events being described. This memoir takes you through the gamut of emotions. There are many humorous anecdotes and some gut-wrenching tales as well.
