In his two decades at the helm of GE, Jack Welch did more to add to the leadership literature than any other CEO of the modern era. In doing so, the GE CEO created his own vernacular, a new language of leadership. When Welch retires at the end of 2001, his legacy as the world's most influential business leader will endure for years to come. Anyone wishing to learn his language and the techniques he used at GE will be a potential buyer of this book. The Welch Lexicon of Management is intended be a companion book to Jack Welch's leadership memoir (due out in September). It is alphabetically organized, and includes more than 250 of the words, ideas, concepts, tools and strategies used or created by Welch and GE between 1981 and 2001. Some listings, such as "Boundaryless" and "Work-Out" are well know, and have already been integrated into the language of business. However, this book also includes dozens of terms that have not yet made it into everyday use ("social architecture," "the four 'Es' of leadership," the GE "operating system," etc.). Words that get "the Six-Six Sigma Icon" are those ideas that formed the centerpiece of Welch's leadership crusade. Welch has said that Six Sigma is "changing the DNA of the company," so it seems fitting that this insignia be used to indicate key terms. "Six Six Sigma" concepts get in-depth treatment which includes the definition, as well as the origins, evolution, significance to GE and lessons. Here are examples: "Six-Six Sigma" Concepts: Boundaryless is the best example of a Six-Six Sigma Welch concept. It became Welch's signature doctrine, a leadership ideal for his brand of learning organization. "Six-Six Sigma" Models: "The Authentic Leadership Model" is one example. "Six-Six Sigma" Initiatives: Includes "Work-Out," "Globalization," "Six Sigma," "Product Services" and the "e-Initiative." The ultimate goal is to create a dictionary - a lexicon -- that is much more - a roadmap of the language and programs employed by the GE CEO in launching the many revolutions that earned Jack Welch the sobriquet of world's "ultimate manager" (Fortune Magazine has called Welch "the ultimate manager.")
