A forester's fascinating stories backed by the latest scientific research illustrate how trees nurture and talk to each other.

In this international bestseller – which has sold more than 320,000 copies in Germany alone – forester and author Peter Wohlleben draws on groundbreaking scientific discoveries to reveal the ways in which trees are like human families and communities: tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, support them as they grow, share nutrients with those who are sick or struggling, and even warn each other of impending dangers.

Wohlleben describes how these discoveries have informed his own practices in his forestry work: a happy forest is a healthy forest, and we need to recognise and nurture these relationships to support sustainable development.

With their newfound understanding of the delightfully complex life of trees, readers will never be able to look at a walk in the woods the same way again.

With a foreword by Tim Flannery

About the Author

Peter Wohlleben spent over twenty years working for the forestry commission in before leaving to put his ideas of ecology into practice. He now runs an environmentally friendly woodland in Germany, where he is working for the return of primeval forests. He is the author of numerous books about trees.

Surprising, inforrmative, easy reading but too drawn out!

An informative, solidly based accountof the communal life of trees and of what might in animals be called intelligence. A very easy read, the language is straightforward and basic (perhaps partly because this is a translation?) but it does meander somewhat, so it ends up being twice as long as it needs to be. The first half really tells you all you need to know.

for tree lovers

I bought this book knowing it was about northern hemisphere trees so was not expecting it to be very enlightening about Australian trees. but i could see that the tree behaviour that the author described could apply to our own forests. however, i did get a bit sick of hearing about the mighty beech.

Hidden Life of Trees should be mandatory reading for politicians, public servants, and school children! It effortlessly engages us with our ability and responsibility to care for the environment.

Love this book so wonderful, yes trees do communicate.

Love this book and if we take the time to hug a tree we would realize the benefits of energy from trees. I feel younger people would benefit from this message as they are the ones who will grow up considering our trees and their importance in our lives.

Disappointing. Not what I had expected and stretches understanding.

Very northern hemisphere oriented

i bought this book after listening to an interesting interview with the author. What wasn`t explained was that the book was all about trees in the northern hemisphere. There one brief mention of Australia on p 233, where using the term `old growth forest` is debated. I found it slightly anthropomorphic, but i DID hug my marri tree after reading it.

What we didn't know about trees.

Fascinating. Anyone who has anything to do with trees at all, should read this.
