The last days of Oscar Wilde - and the ghosts that haunted him

After being imprisoned in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred Bosie Douglas (Colin Morgan), Oscar Wilde (Rupert Everett) is penniless and in poor health, stumbling the streets of Paris. Out of prison, he survives by falling back on his flamboyant irony and brilliant wit that defined him.

Oscar's thoughts are imbued with love and betrayal and permeated with those closest to him: Bosie, his literary agent Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas), his great Reggie Turner (Colin Firth), and his estranged wife Constance (Emily Watson).

As the film travels through Wilde's final act and journeys from England to France to Italy, desire and loyalty face off, the transience of lust is laid bare, and the true riches of love are revealed.

Industry Reviews

"The title of Oscar Wilde's fairy tale "The Happy Prince" was not his subtlest use of irony, but as seen in Rupert Everett's film that bears the same name, it was tragically apt."
Peter Keough, Boston Globe

"Florid but warmhearted - much like the man at its center - The Happy Prince is a haunting portrait of the aftermath of betrayal; of how the master of comedy became a tragedy."
Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

"It's a passion project that never devolves into mere passion; a sober (if loving) look at an inebriated soul."
Matthew Lickona, San Diego Reader

"An Oscar Wilde rarely seen, and very necessary to see today."
Irene Crespo, CinemanĂa
